By our count, there are currently 11 vegan or mostly vegan restaurants on Maui — six cafés (aaRoots, Hempy’s Shake and Wake, Maui Kombucha, Choice Health Bar, Earth Aloha Eats and Niu Life Deli) and five food trucks (Papio’s Place, Rainbow Kitchen, Ahonui Foods, Maui Garden Grove Café and Earth Aloha Eats.) While the total number of vegan outlets has grown considerably in recent years, there is not a single high-end, all-vegan restaurant anywhere on the island.

On a positive note, in recent years several new vegan enterprises have opened and one has expanded. One of the newer vegan establishments is a small, friendly, whole food, plant-based café in Wailuku called Hempy’s Shake and Wake, 291 Hookahi St. Hempy’s features smoothies, desserts, sandwiches and soup.
