By our count, there are currently 11 vegan or mostly vegan restaurants on Maui — six cafés (aaRoots, Hempy’s Shake and Wake, Maui Kombucha, Choice Health Bar, Earth Aloha Eats and Niu Life Deli) and five food trucks (Papio’s Place, Rainbow Kitchen, Ahonui Foods, Maui Garden Grove Café and Earth Aloha Eats.)  While the total number of vegan outlets has grown considerably in recent years, there is not a single high-end, all-vegan restaurant anywhere on the island.

A community of homes and businesses wiped out. More than 2,200 structures were destroyed, over 80% residential. Irreplaceable cultural centers key to Hawaiian history no longer exist. There aren’t a lot of vegan restaurants on Maui, and we’ve lost one with the closing of Sprout Vegan Café in Wailea.  On a positive note, in recent years several new vegan enterprises have opened and one has expanded. One of the newer vegan establishments is a small, friendly, whole food, plant-based café in Wailuku called Hempy’s Shake and Wake, 291 Hookahi St.  Hempy’s features smoothies, desserts, sandwiches and soup.

David Raatz, a vegan Maui attorney and Deputy Attorney for County Council Services, was featured in Maui Times for donating part of his liver to save the life of a child … Vegan restaurant a’a Roots was profiled by KHON TV. … Vegan food truck Papio’s Place has moved to South Maui Gardens, 30 Alahele Pl., Kihei … Vegan Maui Garden Grove Café has created new kids’ corner in the outdoor seating area … Recently the Vegan Society of Hawaii presented a Zoom talk by Dr. Dean Ornish, “A Unifying Theory for Lifestyle Medicine.” It proved to be one of VSH’s most profound health-related presentations in recent years.

Without much fanfare, a number of relatively new outlets like Maui Garden Grove Café, Sprout Vegan Café, Niu Life Kitchen, Rainbow Kitchen and Papio’s Place have expanded Maui’s vegan dining options, alongside established vegan or largely vegan enterprises like a’a Roots, Earth Aloha Easts, Choice Health Bar, Moku Roots and Maui Kombucha. Speaking of Papio’s Place, this month it relocates to South Maui Gardens, 35 Auhana Rd., Kihei.

The Vegan Society of Hawaii will present a slideshow and cooking demonstration on healthy eating featuring Colin Zhu, DO, DipABLM, on September 1 at 7 p.m. at the J. Walter Cameron Center. For the cooking demonstration, Dr. Zhu, known as the Chef Doc, will prepare Asian Style Tofu Lettuce Boats and Yogurt Grape Pops.
