Maui Vegan News for June 2026
Another one bites the dust: Maui has lost yet another vegan restaurant. The Ahonui Food Truck across from Costco has transformed from a vegan restaurant into an ice cream and smoothie spot that includes dairy milk and honey. Ahonui still offers many vegan options, but sadly, it is no longer a restaurant or all-vegan.

THIS MONTH IN VEGAN HISTORY
John Robbins dies. John Robbins, author of Diet for a New America and one of the modern movement’s most influential critics of factory farming, dies at 77. (June 11, 2025).
John McDougall dies. Dr. John McDougall, a leading advocate of a low-fat vegan, starch-centered diet and founder of the McDougall Program, dies at 77. (June 22, 2024).
USDA models a healthy vegan pattern. USDA Agricultural Research Service reports that the Healthy Vegetarian Dietary Pattern in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans can be adapted to a vegan diet while still meeting nutrient recommendations for healthy adults, with zinc for adult men as the main exception. (June 13, 2022).
Eleven Madison Park goes fully plant-based. The three-Michelin-star New York restaurant reopens with an entirely plant-based menu, a landmark moment for vegan fine dining. (June 10, 2021). (Animal products were reintroduced in October 2025.)
Science quantifies veganism’s climate advantage. A landmark Science paper finds that shifting away from animal products could sharply cut food-related emissions and reduce global agricultural land use by about 75 percent. (June 1, 2018).
Burger King adopts animal welfare standards. After pressure from PETA, Burger King announces new supplier guidelines on animal welfare, showing that major fast-food chains were beginning to respond to organized animal advocacy. (June 28, 2001).
McLibel ruling faults McDonald’s. In the McLibel judgment, a British court finds that some key criticisms of McDonald’s were true, including findings tied to misleading advertising and cruelty to animals.(June 19, 1997).
Plantmilk Society pioneers soy milk in Britain. Leslie Cross, vice-president of the Vegan Society, helps establish the Plantmilk Society, which would go on to produce one of the first widely distributed soy milks in the Western world. (June 1956).
Bronson Alcott reaches Alcott House. By late June 1842, Bronson Alcott is writing from Alcott House in Surrey, the reform community and school named in his honor that later fed into the English vegetarian movement. (June 30, 1842).
The first SPCA is founded. Reformers meet at Old Slaughter’s Coffee House in London and establish the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the first organization of its kind in the world. (June 16, 1824).
