Vegan News for September 2022

The Vegan Society of Hawaii will present a slideshow and cooking demonstration on healthy eating featuring Colin Zhu, DO, DipABLM, on Thursday, September 1 at 7 p.m. at the J. Walter Cameron Center. Free and open to the public.

For the cooking demonstration, Dr. Zhu, known as the Chef Doc, will prepare Asian Style Tofu Lettuce Boats and Yogurt Grape Pops.

Mask wearing and social distancing are encouraged at this indoor, free event. No reservations needed. Presented by the Vegan Society of Hawaii; food provided by Kahului Down to Earth Organic and Natural.

Niu Life Kitchen has opened at the Promenade Food Court, 2050 Main Street, Wailuku, featuring “innovative cultured coconut desserts and plant-based sandwiches, wraps, salads, snacks, and beverages.”

The unique enterprise was founded in 2016 by Chef Sha’anan Fader and Ashley Stewart. “The Niu Life Kitchen Farm in Kula — growing kalo, bananas, herbs, greens, onions, root vegetables, citrus, avocado, and more—supplies our Deli kitchen, along with other farms around the island.

“We make the majority of our food fresh each morning, so we pack as many nutrients as possible into each bite. Our goal: You feel satisfied, grounded, and super bright every time you eat at Niu Life Kitchen.”

September 1846: A recipe for a plain bird’s nest sago pudding, which has been described as “the earliest known deliberately vegan recipe,” is published

September 1847: William Horsell founds the world’s first vegetarian society in England.

September 1849:  The Vegetarian Advocate reviews the Kitchen Philosophy for Vegetarians, which may be the first known vegan cookbook.

September 1945: An article in the Vegetarian Society’s newsletter states that “a number of our members, who do not use animal products of any kind, formed themselves into a group which has since adopted the title of ‘The Vegan Society.’”

September 2001: Bowing to pressure from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, Wendy’s followed McDonald’s and Burger King in making some reforms in the treatment of hens.

September 2020:  Nordstrom becomes the US retailer to announce a ban on fur and exotic animal skins.

September 2020: British supermarket chain launched dedicated vegan aisles in 359 stores.
