THIS MONTH IN VEGAN HISTORY

Every movement has its quiet moments and turning points. This month, we look back at nearly two centuries to unearth the breakthroughs, firsts and corners of vegan history that took place in the month of September. From sago pudding to supermarket aisles, from 19th-century pamphlets to fast-food chain reforms, September has always had more than its share of quietly revolutionary moments.

🍮 September 1846

The first known vegan recipe enters print.
A plain bird’s nest sago pudding—free from animal products—was published in England, marking what food historians now consider the earliest deliberately vegan recipe. Modest in flavor, radical in principle.

🌱 September 1847

Vegetarianism becomes an organized movement.
William Horsell founds the world’s first Vegetarian Society in Ramsgate, England. It laid the groundwork for future debates about dairy, eggs and what would eventually become veganism.

📖 September 1849

One of the earliest vegan cookbooks is reviewed.
The Kitchen Philosophy for Vegetarians appears in The Vegetarian Advocate. Predating soy lattes by 150 years, it offered plant-only cooking guidance for a movement still figuring itself out.

🧾 September 1945

The Vegan Society is publicly acknowledged for the first time.
A brief article in the UK Vegetarian Society newsletter notes that a splinter group avoiding all animal products has begun calling itself “The Vegan Society.” The word had just been coined; the vision was already bold.

🐔 September 2001

Fast-food giants face pressure to improve animal welfare.
Wendy’s joins McDonald’s and Burger King in announcing reforms to hen housing after public pressure from PETA. Though limited, it marked an early example of ethical leverage over multinational food giants.

🧥 September 2020

Fur is out at Nordstrom.
The upscale U.S. retailer bans fur and exotic animal skins in all stores. Coming during the pandemic, it signaled how consumer ethics were reshaping fashion—subtly but decisively.

🛒 September 2020

Veganism gets its own aisle.
British supermarket chain Asda launches dedicated vegan sections in 359 stores, making plant-based choices more visible and convenient. Supermarkets rarely lead revolutions, but this was one.

🎤 September 2021

Jaden Smith brings vegan ethics to the climate stage.
At the NYC Climate Strike, the artist and activist performs before thousands and links environmental justice to vegan ideals, urging the crowd to “heal the world.” When pop culture carries a message, it moves.

🎓 September 2023

Universities go plant-based from the inside out.
More than 800 academics publicly back the Plant-Based Universities campaign. What began as student organizing at UK campuses gains traction at institutions like Cambridge and Lancaster, plant-based food is no longer fringe, but policy.

🏛️ September 2024

Veganism gains legal protection in Denmark.
A Danish court rules that veganism is a protected philosophical belief under the European Convention on Human Rights. The case, brought by parents denied a vegan school lunch for their child, resulted in a precedent-setting verdict and compensation.
